A Google search of the phrase “new normal” brought up 2,340,000,000 results. The problem is, I don’t believe there will be a new normal let alone a return to normal. I believe this is a workplace evolution. Workplace trends and paradigms that were already in existence will continue to grow, expand and diversify, but now at an accelerated pace.
A recent article by Atlantic staff writer Derek Thompson highlights this idea, “Coronavirus Is Creating a Huge, Stressful Experiment in Working From Home” Atlantic Ideas. The future of work won’t be something radically different from what we knew in January 2020. Rather, the pandemic is accelerating trends that were already taking place. As Thompson points out, remote work was already a trend in the U.S. but now it’s been accelerated at hyper-speed.
For instance, workforce distribution was already happening. Now it’s a fact on the ground for many companies in response to COVID, with disbursed employees connecting virtually across the globe. One client I know was already in the process off-shoring most of its task-driven technical roles. A few weeks ago, they drastically cut middle management in the U.S. and restructured teams across the globe with new bosses in different countries. Another client was struggling to improve communication across the firm. Now they have weekly all-hands with the CEO, COVID calls, virtual team-building sessions, new SKPYE chat software and they are communicating more than ever. A recent employee survey showed their employee’s satisfaction with communication has risen since they implemented stay-at-home.
